Peter Kyle, Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, visited Peterborough today [31 May]. The Shadow Minister joined Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Peterborough, Andrew Pakes.

Peter Kyle and Andrew Pakes visited Peterborough College as part of Labour’s plans for creating more green jobs and setting up Great British Energy. They were also able to highlight the party’s commitment to break down barriers to opportunity.

These commitments, which are two of Labour’s first steps for change, include creating thousands of new skilled jobs as part of the Green Prosperity Plan and recruiting 6,5000 new teachers in key subjects. The net zero carbon industries have an average annual wage £8,200 higher than this region’s average income.

Peter Kyle said:

“Labour’s clean energy mission will create thousands of jobs in the East of England and boost our energy independence.

“The new Green Technology Centre at Peterborough College will be a brilliant place for students to learn the skills needed for the jobs of the future.

“It’s time to end the Conservative chaos and get Britain’s future back.”

Peterborough College is currently building the Centre for Green Technology. This state-of-the-art facility is poised to become a hub for green technology education and skills development, preparing future generations for careers in clean energy production.

Peter Kyle and Andrew Pakes were shown a ‘classroom of the future’ while at Peterborough College. The classroom has integrated state-of-the-art conferencing facilities which enable one teacher to instruct multiple classes simultaneously and was developed in partnership with Google.

Andrew Pakes, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Peterborough, said:

“As the UK transitions to a brighter, greener, future, the jobs in clean technologies will be highly skilled and students in Peterborough will be ready to compete with the best in the world to secure these roles.

“Labour is promising a Green Prosperity Plan which could see 38,000 new jobs to the East of England. Making sure our young people are ready to take that opportunity head on is vital.”

Louise Perry, Chief Financial Officer, added:

“I am thrilled to share our journey towards sustainable education with Peter Kyle and Andrew Pakes. Our dedication to innovation and sustainability drives us to spearhead transformative projects like the Centre for Green Technology.

“This initiative not only reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship but also showcases our belief in integrating cutting-edge technology with education for the benefit of our students and the communities we serve.

“By embracing green technology, we not only prepare our students for the future job market but also contribute to building a more sustainable society. I am excited to demonstrate the impactful work happening at Peterborough College and inspire others to join us on this journey towards a greener future.”
