NHS Doctor selected for Labour to be next Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

The Labour Party is pleased to announce the selection of NHS Doctor, Nik Johnson as the Labour candidate to be the next mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.

Dr Nik Johnson is a Children’s doctor who has worked at his local NHS hospital, Hinchingbrooke, in Huntingdon for the past 14 years.

He has been a councillor for his home community of St Neots East on Huntingdonshire District Council since May 2018.

Dr Nik lives on the outskirts of St Neots with his wife, Donna, who is also a doctor and their three children.

Dr Nik Johnson said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be the Labour candidate for Mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, I can’t wait to start campaigning.

“The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority is a diverse area from the Fens, to our busy metropolitan areas and bustling market towns, to our smallest villages.

“But no matter where you live we will all face huge challenges as we emerge from the pandemic.

“Over the last year, working within the NHS, I have seen and experienced things I never believed I would see in my career, or, indeed, lifetime.

“This is not just a health crisis – it’s also an economic crisis. The Covid pandemic has taken a terrible toll on our families and communities.

“However, I refuse to give up on hope for the future.

“I believe public health will play a big part in the recovery from the pandemic. My experience from 30 years working on the NHS frontline gives me the edge over the other candidates in leading that recovery.

“While defeating the pandemic is paramount and, if I’m elected, I’ll work tirelessly with authorities and communities across the Region to achieve this, we must also work together to protect and grow our local economy.

“I want to ensure our Region gets the transport infrastructure, affordable and, more importantly, social housing, jobs and resources we need and that will to match our strategic and economic importance to the UK economy.

“My core values are Compassion, Co-operation and Community. I will work with all communities to make them hopeful and optimistic future vision we all want to see become a reality.

“I want to be the Labour mayor for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough that delivers that vision for all.”
